The New Orleans Saints held wide receiver Rashid Shaheed Saints out of their training camp practice on Aug. 3 out of an abundance of caution, but head coach Dennis Allen expects him back on Aug. 4.
“He’s dealing with a little bit of hamstring tightness,” Allen said after Saturday’s practice session. “I think it was a little bit more of a precautionary measure today. So we took the day off today so we can physically reevaluate him and see if we can get him back out here tomorrow.”
The team has dealt with a rash of injuries at the position and it makes sense to players a day off when their body tells them they need it. Shaheed won Pro Bowl and All-Pro recognition for his efforts returning punts and kickoffs last season and he figures to play an even greater role offensively with Klint Kubiak on the headset.
He’s already broken out — Shaheed was the only player in the league last year with 500-plus yards from scrimmage and 300 or more yards on both punt and kick returns — but the sky’s the limit with a forward-thinking offensive coordinator calling plays. We’ll keep an eye out on Sunday and see whether this hamstring issue lingers.
