Defense seizes the day in joint practice with the Rams

The Chargers and Rams came together for a competitive practice at The Bolt in El Segundo, CA, on Sunday.

Both teams had their moments, but the Bolts’ defense reigned supreme.

In total, defensive coordinator Jesse Minter’s unit forced six takeaways. The first-team defense, in particular, had five of them, with three being interceptions and two forced fumbles and recoveries.

The defense dominating has been a continuation of the past few practices, which also resulted in big takeaways.

“Results build confidence,” Minter said. “It started to stack up the last three of four days where guys were playing with a lot of confidence and trusting each other and starting to really understand fits and routes and things like that.

“When you get an opportunity to test it against a different opponent, it’s certainly great when you get the results,” Minter added.

Nick Niemann, Denzel Perryman, Asante Samuel Jr. and Kristian Fulton each notched an interception. Alohi Gilman and Daiyan Henley combined for a forced fumble and recovery. Joey Bosa had a strip sack.

“Very encouraging,” Derwin James said. “We got the ball out but we have to continue to stack the days.”
