Joel Klatt says Ohio State football needs win over Michigan ‘badly’

Preseason top-25 polls are officially starting to come out with some more credence. Practices have begun, and the kickoff of the new college football season is just weeks away. While it’s still scorching hot in most parts of the states, fall is coming soon, and Ohio State football is just about back.

For the Buckeyes, as well as in the USA Today LBM Coaches Poll, they consistently have come in at No. 2, behind the Georgia Bulldogs. However, one analyst isn’t believing the hype, and he provides a firm and reasonable reason for why he’s placing Ohio State at No. 1.

“So, for me, it comes down to this, and it’s roster construction. You can say that it’s all about talent, but I think that in the last couple of years it has shifted from talent to veteran talent, Klatt said. “You’ve got to add that veteran aspect. That’s why we saw TCU in the national championship. That’s why we saw Washington and Michigan in the national championship. That’s why Michigan won the cational championship, and when you look toward veteran talent, then it’s clear to me that the No.1 team in the country in the preseason should be and is, for me, Ohio State.”

The Buckeyes have that veteran aspect, especially among their roster’s leaders.

The most vocal positions in football — safety, linebacker, and quarterback — Ohio State has experienced talent. The Buckeyes also have a weaker non-conference schedule than many top-25 teams which should bode well for them.

While Ohio State has an elite incoming class led by the nation’s No. 1 overall player Jeremiah Smith, four of its five players on the offensive line are juniors or above.
