Sometimes, it’s not the sheer number of penalties or penalty yards that are alarming. It’s the situational penalties. The Commanders were in the red zone six times on Sunday and did not score a touchdown. They committed five procedural penalties in the red zone, pushing them back and forcing them to kick a field goal. The first came on the first drive when rookie tight end Ben Sinnott was called for a false start on fourth-and-1. Washington was lining up to go for it, and considering how they were running the ball, you liked their chances.
Speaking of the first drive, Ekeler returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown. However, recently signed linebacker Nick Bellore was called for holding, nullifying the score. It was the correct call. Speaking of Bellore, he also had a crushing 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct on Washington’s first kickoff to New York, giving the Giants field position around midfield. Bellore is 35, signed for his special teams prowess. How is he making multiple killer mistakes? Don’t be shocked if the Commanders make a move here.
Discipline is an issue for this team right now. And when you lack talent across the board, that’s a recipe for disaster.
