BLACKSBURG – Linebacker Caleb Woodson will wear No. 25 when Virginia Tech hosts Rutgers on Saturday, Sept. 21 at 3:30 p.m. ET. This will be the first time the sophomore will carry on the legacy of historic Virginia Tech head coach Frank Beamer.

Woodson’s No. 25 recognition comes after a strong defensive performance against Old Dominion last weekend. The Haymarket, Virginia native had his best game of the 2024 season, recording 7 tackles (3 solo) over 31 total snaps. His seven tackles tied for most on the team in the 37-17 win over the Monarchs.

The 6-foot-3, 224-pound Woodson gained valuable experience as a freshman in 2023. Over 13 games, the linebacker recorded 22 tackles (12 solo) and 1.5 TFLs. This season, Woodson has served as a mobile chess piece for defensive coordinator Chris Marve, playing in both middle and weakside linebacker formations. Over three games, Woodson has tallied 11 tackles, fifth highest among the Tech defense.

The weekly tradition of wearing No. 25 started in 2016 and has continued each season. Each week, a member of the special teams wears the number to recognize how influential Frank Beamer was to Tech football both as a player and a coach. The jersey number was retired in 2002. Fans can find more information on who has worn the jersey here.
