Oddsmakers seem to be expecting a lopsided matchup when the New England Patriots travel to Levi’s Stadium to face the San Francisco 49ers in Week 4.
BetMGM currently has the Patriots listed as 10-point underdogs, following back-to-back losses to the New York Jets and Seattle Seahawks. The offense has continued to sputter in recent outings, and they’ll be on the road against an angry 49ers team hell-bent on washing away the stench of consecutive losses to the Los Angeles Rams and Minnesota Vikings.
New England’s defense has been the saving grace for the team over the last few seasons, but the unit showed cracks in the loss to the Jets. Keep in mind, they were facing an elite offense with a red-hot Aaron Rodgers under center.
They also took the unbeaten Seahawks into overtime and lost by only a field goal.
While the Patriots look overwhelmed on paper, they could surprise some people with the 49ers dealing with their own struggles as well. Injuries have been a big issue for San Francisco early in the season. Players like Deebo Samuel, Christian McCaffrey, Dre Greenlaw, Javon Hargrave and George Kittle have all been banged up.
Sure, All-Pro pass-rusher Nick Bosa is going to give the Patriots’ shoddy offensive line fits in this matchup, but they could settle things down if they’re able to get back to running the football effectively.
It isn’t out of the realm of possibility that the Patriots could make this a much closer game than expected. These lopsided odds might be worth a gamble on the underdogs.
