Predicting the 12-team College Football Playoff field ahead of Week 9

As we get deeper into the 2024 college football season, upsets are going to take place, and the playoff picture is going to change. We saw that this week with the No. 1 Texas Longhorns losing to the No. 5 Georgia Bulldogs, and the No. 7 Alabama Crimson Tide losing to the No. 11 Tennessee Volunteers.

With only one more week in October, the College Football Playoff picture looks quite different than a month ago.

The Oregon Ducks are No. 1 and have a good chance to get into both the Big Ten championship game and the playoff should they take care of business going forward.

There is still a great deal of football to be played over the next several weeks, so this ranking will undoubtedly change again, but for now, this is what things look like heading into Week 8.

Playoff Format Refresher: The 12 participating teams will be the five conference champions ranked highest by the CFP selection committee, plus the next seven highest-ranked teams. The four highest-ranked conference champions will be seeded one through four and will receive a first-round bye. The fifth conference champion will be seeded where it was ranked or at No. 12 if it is outside the top 12 rankings. Nonconference champions ranked in the top four will be seeded beginning at No. 5. Because of this, the seedings, 1 through 12, could look different than the final rankings.
