Longhorns QB in the running for prestigious award

With the college football season entering its final stretch, teams across the nation are making their final push for the college football playoff. That also means time is winding down for players to make their case for yearly awards. On Tuesday, Longhorns QB Quinn Ewers was named a candidate for the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award.

In six starts this season, Ewers has led the Longhorns to five wins, including three over-ranked teams. He has completed 130 of his 188 passing attempts for 1,389 yards and 14 touchdowns. When the Texas native has been healthy, he has averaged 231.5 yards per game.

As Ewers has been a steady presence under center, he has also made history. He has a 19-game streak with at least one passing touchdown, dating back to the 2022 season. That is the longest streak by a Longhorn quarterback since Colt McCoy from 2007-09. Ewers is also the only quarterback since the start of last season to throw three touchdowns without an interception against multiple top-ten teams.

While the Longhorns quarterback is focused on winning a national championship,  a Davey O’Brien award would be an excellent way to end his college career. The talented junior has been a critical part of a Longhorns offense that ranks 11th in completion percentage, 18th in scoring, and 21st in total offense.

Although Ewers has put together an impressive 2024 campaign, he does have competition. Thirty-five players are in the running for the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award. If Ewers can build on his start to the season, he could set himself apart from the competition.
