Frank Kush Field Named Collegiate Football Field of the Year

TEMPE – Frank Kush Field at Mountain America Stadium, managed by Josh Lenz and the ASU Grounds Crew, has been named the Sports Field Management Association (SFMA) Collegiate Football Field of the Year.

The natural grass surface helped Sun Devil Football to a Big 12 Championship and an appearance in the College Football Playoff Quarterfinals with a perfect 6-0 home record this season. The grounds crew provided a pristine playing field and a unique design for all six games.

Lenz shared, “We are so excited to receive College Football’s Field of the Year Award! I’m so proud of our crew for grinding all year and making this happen. They deserve all the credit! It’s such a rewarding way for us to end the most exciting season of football we have been a part of. And a special thank you to SFMA for recognizing our hard work and presenting us with this honor.”

The SFMA is a non-profit, professional association for the nearly 2,500 men and women who manage sports fields worldwide. This prestigious award spotlights the individuals and programs that excelled this year in providing quality, safe playing surfaces.

Every year, SFMA presents the industry’s highest honor to members who manage baseball, football, soccer, softball, and other sporting grounds at the professional, collegiate, school (K-12), and parks and recreation levels.

“The dedication and expertise of these Field of the Year Award winners exemplify the best in sports field management,” says SFMA President Sun Roesslein, CSFM. “Their commitment to excellence ensures that athletes of all levels have access to safe, high-quality playing surfaces. We are honored to recognize their contributions to the field management profession.”

The SFMA Awards Committee reviewed each submittal and independently rated applicants on field quality as impacted by staffing, budget, use, monthly maintenance, and a visual story that documents challenges and successes.
