Xavier Pinson transfers to New Mexico State

Former LSU point guard Xavier Pinson will be heading out west for his fifth and final season of eligibility.

On Wednesday afternoon, Pinson, who entered the transfer portal following the dismissal of coach Will Wade, committed to New Mexico State. The news was reported by On3’s Joe Tipton.

Pinson, who has four years of experience in the SEC and two years as a full-time starter under his belt — is a major addition for new Aggies coach Greg Heiar, who replaces Chris Jans, now at Mississippi State. Jans’ Bulldogs were one of the other finalists to land Pinson, in addition to Georgia Tech.

Pinson arrived at LSU this past offseason as a transfer portal addition from Missouri, where he was a major contributor in his first three seasons. After averaging 13.6 points in 2020-21, that figure dropped to 9.8 this past season with the Tigers. His assist numbers did increase, however, from 2.9 per game to 4.8.

Pinson’s one-year stint in Baton Rouge was an overall disappointment, though he did play some good basketball. He’ll hope for a fresh start with an NMSU team that is coming off a 27-7 season that saw it reach the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
