We have a long way to go in QB competition

The Seahawks elected not to pick a quarterback in this year’s draft and they haven’t signed any veterans, aside from bringing Geno Smith back on a one-year deal. That means over the summer Smith will be competing with Drew Lock to become the team’s new starter in the absence of Russell Wilson, who was traded to the Broncos.

Smith should probably be considered the favorite given his experience in the offense and his established relationship with Seattle’s receivers. However, Week 1 is still a long way off and Lock has time to catch up. Here’s what offensive coordinator Shane Waldron had to say about the ongoing QB battle on KJR 93.3 yesterday, per Gregg Bell at the News Tribune.

“Right now, Geno has done such a good job of carrying over (the offensive principles from 2021). He already had a head start over Drew right there… We have a long time to go. We are just in T-shirts and shorts right now, going against air. We have a long way to go to see where this competition goes.”

Waldron also took time to praise Lock’s arm talent and ability to make different types of throws.

“The thing I like about Drew is, really, his ability to make every throw on the field. The way he moves and he changes his arm angle and doesn’t have to be just a (static) pocket passer out there.”

Lock went 8-13 as Denver’s starter over the last few years, while Smith has posted a 13-21 record in his career.
