Four UDFAs who could make Commanders 53-man roster

The Washington Commanders were quiet in free agency this offseason. Washington signed a pair of guards in Andrew Norwell and Trai Turner, backup defensive end Efe Obada and wide receiver/kick returner Alex Erickson.

There’s no guarantee all of those outside free agents will make Washington’s roster in 2022. Don’t be surprised if the Commanders sign more veteran free agents before training camp. Specific positions, such as defensive tackle, cornerback and linebacker, could use experienced depth ahead of training camp.

Another area the Commanders could find depth is through their undrafted free agent class. Washington signed more than a dozen UDFAs after the draft, and with some questionable depth, multiple undrafted free agents could find their way onto the Commanders’ roster.

Washington signed only running back Jaret Patterson as a UDFA last offseason, and he made the team, playing in several games.

While it’s doubtful more than one or two undrafted free agents make the initial 53-man roster, we examine which four UDFAs have the best opportunity to make Washington’s roster.

There’s nothing special about linebacker Drew White as an athlete. He’s not particularly big at 6-foot-0, 228 pounds, nor does he have blazing speed. However, White is a tackling machine who was a three-year starter at Notre Dame. The Commanders need linebacker help. White is not a guy who will come in and start, but he made himself into a difference-maker at Notre Dame.

White could give Washington linebacker depth while also helping out on special teams. The Commanders will keep a young linebacker — or two around — on either the 53-man roster or practice squad and don’t count White out.
