NBC Sports poll of NFL California fan bases is very bad

Sunday Night Football on NBC is venturing into comedy, it appears.

The popular NFL program took to Twitter this week to ask a question about the three NFL fan bases in California. With the Raiders now in Nevada, the 49ers, Rams and Chargers are left to hold it down in the Golden State.

However, there’s no real contest as to which fan base rules the state. At least not to anyone observing the state of the NFL in California since Oakland became Las Vegas. That’s why this question from SNF on NBC falls into the realm of, perhaps unintentional, comedy:

Ranking fans based on which group is “better” is impossible. It’s not only impossible to quantify what constitutes a “good” fan, but it’s also not something that can be ascribed to an entire fan base.

Based on sheer numbers though this NBC poll isn’t a contest. The 49ers rank well above the Rams and Chargers in terms of number of fans. The evidence can be shown in the stadium takeovers when the 49ers are in Southern California.

The Raiders probably still rank second on this list despite their departure to a new state.

The Chargers have struggled to gain traction in Los Angeles since fleeing San Diego. And after stories last year about 49ers fans invading SoFi Stadium in Week 18 and then in the NFC championship game, it’s impossible to place the Rams above them.

This NBC poll is bad, and it would behoove them to try and play it off as a joke.
