Is the lack of a QB commit in 2023 a concern?

QB Walker Howard’s 2022 player profile

All of the top-10 quarterbacks for the class of 2023 have announced their college commitments and none of them chose LSU. Not because the Tigers didn’t try to sign any of them, but because they simply chose to play elsewhere.

LSU had its name in the hat for Arch Manning, Dante Moore, Jaden Rashada and Rickie Collins, with Collins playing in LSU’s backyard at Woodlawn High School in Baton Rouge.

Collins is committed to Purdue, and a late push could make things interesting there, but it will be an uphill battle to flip him as he has been committed to the Boilermakers since last October. The Tigers also remain in the running for four-star quarterback Brock Glenn, though he has received a number of predictions to Florida State recently.

So, is the lack of a quarterback commit concerning for coach Brian Kelly and LSU? In previous years, it may have been. But nowadays, it’s not.

You see, there is a little thing called the transfer portal that allows you to sign players who are already at the college level, some of which have a lot of experience. One such example is Jayden Daniels, who the Tigers picked up from Arizona State this offseason.

Who is to say Kelly won’t do that again? He can sign a talented quarterback from the portal that could possibly come in and start on Day 1. Plus, he signed one of the best quarterbacks in the country last cycle in Walker Howard, a player you can build your team around.

So, if you are worried about the lack of quarterbacks committing to LSU in 2023 — a class that is otherwise strong and ranks No. 9 in the nation — pump the brakes. Kelly likely has a plan.
