2022 training camp preview: Washington Commanders wide receivers

For the first time since the 2016 season, Washington Commanders’ fans should feel good about the team’s wide receivers.

Washington re-signed star Terry McLaurin to a three-year extension earlier this month and drafted Jahan Dotson in the first round of April’s 2022 NFL draft.

Washington quarterback Carson Wentz has no excuses in 2022. The Commanders’ wide receivers should be a team strength if everyone stays healthy and some of the younger players progress as expected.

Roster locks

Five roster locks means Washington doesn’t have a lot of room here. However, expect the Commanders to keep at least six receivers. If Washington keeps six, that final spot could come down to special teams. Last year’s return man, DeAndre Carter, is gone. Carter did a good job and it was a surprise Washington didn’t make a stronger effort to retain him.

Training camp storyline: Will Samuel be healthy?

The Commanders signed Samuel to a three-year deal last offseason and got six receptions from him in 2021. An offseason injury ruined Samuel’s first season in Washington. He was fully healthy this spring, running and cutting like normal. However, the team sat Samuel in the final days of the offseason program out of caution. We should know soon if it was out of caution or if there is something to be concerned about.

All signs point to a healthy Samuel, which is good for the Commanders.

Training camp battle: Dax Milne vs. Alex Erickson
