Mixed messages coming from Diontae Johnson and Mike Tomlin

Mixed messages coming from Diontae Johnson and Mike Tomlin

There has only been one workout so far at Pittsburgh Steelers training camp but things are already a little suspicious. On Wednesday the team had it’s first full workout and wide receiver Diontae Johnson was on the sidelines doing individual work while his teammates got their reps.

This in itself it’s a huge shock. Johnson wants a new contract and since the league has suddenly normalized the idea of a “hold-in” where the player is with the team but bows out of all team activities on the field, Johnson has followed suit.

But who prompted this? Johnson claims is he had his way, he’d be out working with his teammates. But he isn’t. He also implied his work with the team would depend on head coach Mike Tomlin. But at his post-practice press conference, Tomlin said Johnson’s absence from team activities was not his idea.

Someone isn’t being honest with us. And my guess is it is Johnson. I have a hard time imagining Tomlin telling Johnson not to work out with the team if he’s healthy. This is an intentional decision by Johnson, likely heavily influenced by his agent and I doubt it pays off for Johnson.

Let us know in the comments, who prompted Johnson to sit out and do you think it will continue?
