Michigan football players at Somerset Mall for Blake Corum toy drive

TROY, Mich. — What was expected to be a well-attended event ended up being near pandemonium (in a good way) as Michigan football fans crowded the first floor of the Somerset Mall to partake in Blake Corum’s toy drive. About 1,000-2,000 people were expected to make it to the event, and approximately 10,000-15,000 crowded the concourses, filling both wings headed toward Macy’s and Nordstrom on opposite ends.

The thought was that, starting at 11 a.m., fans could donate a toy, which Corum is donating to Detroit Rescue Mission, and get their picture taken with the star running back. However, the event started hours earlier than anticipated, and there were so many people, not everyone could be accommodated for pictures. Thus, Corum and several of his teammates went out into the crowd to meet and greet with the adoring public as they, in turn, gave back to the community.

Corum, naturally, was ecstatic about the turnout.

“It means everything to me. This is what community is about,” Corum said. “Today was the definition of community. It wasn’t myself, it wasn’t my teammates, it was everyone coming together.”

Sophomore defensive tackle Mason Graham was among the many who arrived before the end of the toy drive and before the Champions Circle autograph event which was set to begin hours later. Once he got into the crowd, he couldn’t believe just how many people showed up.

“I didn’t know it was going to be this big of a turnout,” Graham said. “It’s cool to see all these Michigan fans out here supporting. Good cause for Blake and some of the guys.”
