Jerod Mayo’s interview skills left one coaching candidate impressed

A new report gives some insight as to how New England Patriots coach Jerod Mayo conducts interviews when speaking with coaching candidates. The Boston Sports Journal’s Greg Bedard published a piece earlier this week with information from one of the candidates that Mayo interviewed.

Mayo has the unenviable task of navigating the post-Bill Belichick rebuild for the Patriots. It certainly is no small feat, as the organization has several areas they need to address both in the draft and free agency.

If anything, it’s a tall task for Mayo, who is looking to make a name for himself in the coaching ranks.

Bedard talked to one assistant who appreciated, among other things, Mayo’s thoroughness throughout the interview, as transcribed by NESN.com’s Dakota Randall.

Bedard wrote:

“He was very sharp,” said the coach. “There were a lot of people in there (including Robyn Glaser, who didn’t ask any questions) and you could see a lot of note-taking going on, but Jerod was fully engaged. His questions were really good and he asked great follow-ups where you could tell he was engaged. He wasn’t just reading them off a piece of paper.

Results will have to be shown on the field in order to make a full judgment on the kind of coach Mayo will be. That much is clear. However, a positive early review on Mayo from others in the league is certainly a good thing.
