Analyst says they will regret passing on Maye

Is there a more polarizing player in the 2024 NFL draft class than North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye?

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder for any prospect, and while everyone seems to love USC quarterback Caleb Williams, opinions are decidedly mixed on Maye.

Maye, along with LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels, are expected to go second and third in this year’s NFL draft. While many are projecting Daniels to Washington at No. 2 overall, former college quarterback and current FOX Sports analyst Joel Klatt thinks the Commanders passing on Maye would be a mistake.

“A lot of people are going to knock Drake Maye over the next few weeks, for what reasons I am not quite sure, Klatt said. “He falls in the (Houston QB) C.J. Stroud category for me of like, “Why is everyone knocking him?’ The dude is phenomenal. Watch his tape. And don’t give me that bullcrap that his feet aren’t that good. Watch the tape. Watch the throws that he makes. He makes throws that the other guys, outside of Caleb Williams, cannot make. And these guys are great players……and none of those guys can make the throws that Drake Maye makes from a top-end perspective.”

After Klatt described why he liked Maye so much, he then discussed Maye with the Commanders.

“If he’s passed over by Washington, I think it’s a mistake,” Klatt said. That’s not a knock on Daniels. That’s how much I believe in Drake Maye. Drake Maye is phenomenal; just watch the tape.”

Klatt then acknowledged Maye can make some “bone-headed decisions,” but his right arm makes throws everyone else dreams of making. Klatt said he will not fall into the trap of making the same mistakes as evaluators did on Josh Allen and Justin Herbert coming out of college, where they were nitpicked for everything.

Thankfully, we are two weeks away from the first round of the draft.
