D.J. McKinney speaks on fitting into Colorado football’s defense

The Colorado Buffaloes have loaded up on defensive talent from the transfer portal once again this offseason. Former Oklahoma State cornerback D.J. McKinney may be one of the more underrated signings, as he’s currently impressing many during his first spring in Boulder.

McKinney spent two seasons with the Cowboys before joining head coach Deion Sanders at CU. After playing in four games and redshirting in 2022, McKinney played in all 14 of Oklahoma State’s games last season, registering 38 tackles and five pass breakups.

McKinney spoke with the media on Thursday about the differences between the two teams, mentioning that Colorado’s defense, led by coordinator Robert Livingston, will play more press-man this season.

“I got an advantage in it (press-man) because of my length,” McKinney said. “I got quick feet.”

A new defensive system isn’t the only change that McKinney is embracing. The 6-foot-2, 190-pound defensive back also spoke about his first few months in Boulder.

“I love everything about it,” he said. “I love the mountains, I love the coaches, I love my teammates. I’m just ready to dive into the culture here.”
