Former Iowa football QB announces transfer portal destination

CBS Sports’ final preseason 2024 bowl projection for Iowa football

Just as the Iowa Hawkeyes are adding at the quarterback position through the portal, their former quarterbacks are finding new homes.

Former Iowa Hawkeyes quarterback Marco Lainez entered the transfer portal at the end of the 2024 regular season and has found his new home.

Lainez confirmed via his X account, along with a post from the program itself, that he is headed to Elon.

Lainez’s decision to transfer came after spending two seasons with the Iowa Hawkeyes but seeing only minor playing time as the third-string quarterback.

His lone appearance for Iowa came in mop-up duty in the Citrus Bowl after the 2023 season. He completed 2 of 7 passes for four yards to go with 51 rushing yards on six carries.

Lainez was sidelined for part of the 2024 season by a broken hand suffered in practice late in the season.

Lainez, a native of Skillman, New Jersey, attended The Hun School in Princeton, New Jersey, before he made his way to Iowa City.

Coming out of high school, Lainez was the No. 45 quarterback and a three-star recruit, per the 247Sports composite.

Lainez joins the Elon Phoenix, who were 6-6 overall and 5-3 in the Coastal Athletic Association Conference this past season.
