Six Texas A&M players named to the Preseason All-SEC Team

Six Texas A&M players named to the Preseason All-SEC Team

The 2022 Texas A&M football team is continuing to receive a whole lot of preseason recognition from various media outlets, with the most recent example from the SEC announcing their Preseason All-SEC Team, consisting of First-Team, Second-Team, and Third-Team unanimous position picks on offense, defense, and special teams throughout the conference.

For the Aggies, six players received spots on the list, consisting of,

Offense
Second-Team, Running back, Devon Achane
Second-Team, Offensive line, Layden Robinson
Third-Team, Wide receiver, Ainias Smith
Defense
  Second-Team, Defensive back, Antonio Johnson
Third-Team, Defensive line, McKinnley Jackson
Specialists
First-Team, Punter, Nik Constantinou
Second-Team, Return specialist, Ainias Smith
Second-Team, All-purpose, Devon Achane
Third-Team, All-purpose, Ainias Smith

Here’s the thing, I fully understand that being recognized as one of the best players at any position in the most dominant conference in college football is nothing to scoff at. Still, it’s baffling that no Texas A&M player was selected to the first team on either offense or defense.

Let’s remember that Devon Achane has been widely noted as a darkhorse Heisman candidate for the 2022 season going back to the end of last season as one of the most lethal offensive players in college football. Furthermore, Antonio Johnson, one of the best defenders in the country and a potential first-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft has been listed as a first-team defender on almost every previous media-based position ranking.

Well, let bygones be bygones, but I’m pretty confident that the bulk of Texas A&M’s starting lineup is going to perform like First-Team selections starting on September 3rd as they kick off the season.
