5 takeaways from Ohio State’s 54-10 romp of Hawkeyes

Don’t look now, but Iowa is playing to get out of the Big Ten West cellar next weekend. Part of this is the rigors of the Big Ten slate to open that Iowa was dealt.

After topping Rutgers, the Hawkeyes have now dropped three straight. Again, losses versus No. 3 Michigan and at No. 2 Ohio State aren’t shockers by any means. Losing to upstart Illinois has Iowa right at the bottom of the West, though, and it’s that loss in combination with just the continued offensive ineptitude that makes it feel like the Hawkeyes aren’t going to be any kind of a factor in this division race.

Entering the season, the consensus was that Iowa was the clear-cut better team than Northwestern. Ultimately, save for that overseas win over Nebraska, the Wildcats have been precisely the bad team that most folks expected. There’s only one problem: the Hawkeyes really can’t be trusted to beat anyone right now. Win this next week and Iowa at least exits the cellar temporarily.
