Starters: The renaissance of placekicker Camden Lewis continued in 2022. He was 14-of-16 on field-goal attempts, including 10-of-10 inside 40 yards. The Ducks were perfect on 64 extra-point attempts in 2022, the last of which Lewis banged off the upright and through for the game-winning point in Oregon’s Holiday Bowl win over North Carolina. That play also was the last in the career of long snapper Karsten Battles, a remarkably consistent and reliable presence on special teams whose excellence resulted in a lack of notoriety, given how the spotlight usually only shines on a long snapper in moments of struggle.

Punting was less consistent, as the Ducks spent most of the 2022 season seeking reliable execution at the position. Adam Barry handled 12 of Oregon’s 32 punts on the season, putting four inside the opposing 20-yard line and blasting one 58 yards, though with an overall average of 40.33 yards. Another transfer, Ross James, averaged 41.88 yards on eight attempts, and Alex Bales averaged 36 yards on seven punts. Unfortunately that unit’s most memorable play in 2022 was probably a mishandled snap in Corvallis that contributed to an OSU comeback win. Oregon’s returners, led by receiver Kris Hutson, were solid but never quite broke through for a game-breaking return.

Reserves: The backup kicker behind Lewis was Andrew Boyle, who was the primary kickoff specialist and averaged 63.6 yards per attempt with 52 touchbacks on 75 kicks. Boyle’s onside kick recovery helped the Ducks win a matchup of top-10 teams against UCLA. Battles’ backup was Luke Basso, who rotated in for reps in 10 different games, banking some experience that will pay dividends now that Battles has graduated.

2023 SPRING PREVIEW

Newcomers: Grant Meadors, Fr.; Luke Dunne, Fr.; Nick Duzansky, Fr.

What to Watch: Lewis opted to play a fifth season, which he’ll enter already at No. 4 all-time in career field goals at Oregon with 37. The record of 51 set by Aidan Schneider from 2014-17 is very much in sight. Lewis also enters 2023 at No. 5…
