Colorado head coach Deion Sanders talks expectations with ESPN

Recapping Deion Sanders’ first week as head coach of Colorado

It may come as a shock to Colorado Buffaloes fans due to his energetic and outgoing nature, but Deion Sanders does not mince words when it comes to coaching football. From his opening press conference to his first words to his new team, Sanders has proved there is a new sheriff in town, and with that comes a winning mindset.

ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg recently spoke with Sanders and Coach Prime made it clear that he will not stand for mediocrity. Sanders told ESPN that he will use several metrics to define success in his first year with the program, ranging from graduation rates to off-field conduct. But when it comes to on-field performance, it’s time for CU to show up (h/t ESPN):

“We will not settle for mediocrity,” Sanders told ESPN. “It is what it is. You’re going to get on this program, or you’re going to get up out of here. We plan on winning and we don’t have time to procrastinate.”

It has also been nice to see that Sanders’ culture has resonated well with CU players. Rittenberg caught up with Shedeur Sanders as well, and the new Buffs quarterback echoed his father’s sentiments:

“It’s not a hard message, because here’s the thing: A lot of people are used to being lied to,” Shedeur Sanders told ESPN. “The players coming in, they’re coming to play — they’re not coming to sit. So if you’ve been here, you’re chilling, you’re thinking your spot’s good, that’s not the case. You’ve got guys wanting to play with top talent, each and every position.”
