Evaluating the current roster, Sooners Wire profiles the current players, with running back Jovantae Barnes up next.

The highest-rated player in the Oklahoma Sooners 2022 recruiting class, Jovantae Barnes has been a standout performer this spring. He’s impressed in practice and many expect him to be a significant contributor to the Sooners’ offense in his true freshman season.

In the Oklahoma Sooners spring game, Barnes carried the ball 17 times for 60 yards and scored two touchdowns. He had the most carries of any running back on the Sooners roster. While he only averaged 3.5 yards per carry, Barnes ran tough and kept churning his legs after first contact. Running behind an offensive line that was split between the two squads, he had a day that reinforced the thought that he’ll have a significant role in 2022.

Kennedy Brooks is off to the NFL. Eric Gray and Marcus Major are the only two scholarship running backs on the roster. Fellow 2022 signee Gavin Sawchuk won’t arrive in Norman until the Summer, giving Barnes a headstart on his 2022 classmate.

With Marcus Major unable to go in the spring game, showed running backs coach Demarco Murray and offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby that he’s more than capable of carrying the load for the Oklahoma Sooners.
